ISO 17024 Personnel Certification: 5 Common Mistakes NDT Firms Make
In the NDT industry, personnel competence is the foundation of inspection reliability. ISO/IEC 17024 defines the standard that personnel certification bodies must meet — but compliance isn't only the certification body's responsibility. NDT firms employing certified personnel must also correctly manage certificate validity, scope, and renewal cycles.
This management is usually handled with spreadsheets or folders of documents — and the same mistakes come up again and again.
Mistake 1: Missing certificate expiry dates
The most common and most costly error. If a technician's NDT certificate has expired, that technician can no longer perform inspections under that method. An inspection carried out on an expired certificate violates both the client contract and the accreditation scope.
Larger firms may hold dozens or hundreds of personnel certificates — across different methods, levels, and certification bodies. Tracking this volume reliably in Excel is not safe. When an update is missed, even a well-maintained spreadsheet can hide a critical certificate through a filter error or a cell offset.

Mistake 2: Out-of-scope job assignments
Every NDT certificate is valid for a specific method (UT, MT, PT, etc.) and level (I, II, III). Some certificates also carry sector or material-type restrictions.
When these restrictions aren't checked at assignment time, errors occur: a Level I technician gets assigned to an inspection that requires Level II; or someone certified in UT performs MT work.
In a paper system, this check depends on whoever creates the work order — and it doesn't always happen.

Mistake 3: Confusion around renewal requirements
